Unlocking Market Trends: The Power of Volume Accumulation in Trading

The Power of Volume Accumulation in Trading: volume accumulation is a powerful concept in stock market analysis that helps traders and investors assess the strength of price movements. By analyzing the trading volume alongside price changes, volume accumulation can provide insights into market trends, buyer and seller activity, and potential reversals. Understanding how volume interacts with price is essential for identifying whether a stock is being actively bought (accumulated) or sold (distributed), offering valuable clues for making informed investment decisions. In this article, we’ll explore the role of volume accumulation and how it can enhance your trading strategy.

What indicators are used to measure volume accumulation?

While there are pros and cons for each indicator, we will limit our analysis using the OBV-indicator on the following two stocks: Neuronetics (STIM) and Trivago (TRVG).

About Neuronetics

Neuronetics, Inc. is a commercial stage medical technology company, which focuses on designing, developing, and marketing products that improve the quality of life for patients who suffer from neurohealth disorders. It operates through United States and International geographical segments. The company was founded by Steven B. Waite, Bruce J. Shook, Norman R. Weldon, and Thomas D. Weldon in 1998 and is headquartered in Malvern, PA.

Neuronetics (STIM) – a good example for The Power of Volume Accumulation

STIM Neuronetics volume accumulation
  • (1) Neuronetics spiked up 36.84% after it provided a business update and issued 2025 guidance. From a technical point of view it broke out over the upper Bollinger Band, which can be seen as a bullish sign. The uptrend, however, started in November already.

  • (2) The volume clearly supports the up-move. But as an investor, you’d be late into the move already. Just looking at the volume alone doesn’t give you enough information to see the very positive accumulation happening.

  • (3) Ever since the low was made in November the stock has been on the rise and so did the On-Balance Volume, supporting the move up.

  • (4) The Average Directional Index (ADX) indicator is a good tool to measure the strength of a trend. Generally, a value above 25 means the stock is in a trend phase. In this example, the indicator has been steadily growing, supporting the move and with a value of 50.70 marking a strong trend phase.

What else to consider about Neuronetics (STIM)

Neuronetics STIM target
  • (1) a potential target/resistance could be the falling trend line. Look out for the short-term uptrend to support the continuation of the bigger formation. A similar move like in the beginning of 2024 is possible.

  • (2) Volume keeps growing, so does its average. Look out for more up days with heavy volume and down days with light volume

  • (3) while the OBV-indicator already made a good move up on a weekly basis, a move above previous highs is desirable to unlock the power of volume accumulation in trading.

  • Whenever you trade stocks like this, don’t forget to set a protective stop to minimize your risk.

About Trivago

trivago NV is a holding company, which engages in the provision of a global hotel and accommodation search platform. It also offers marketing tools and services for advertisers. The company was founded by Rolf T.J. Schromgens, Peter Vinnemeier, and Stephan Stubner in 2005 and is headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Trivago (TRVG) – another example for The Power of Volume Accumulation in Trading

Trivago
  • (1) Trivago had two breakouts already, the first one end of November, the second one just now. Both times, the breakout and the subsequent trading days happened outside the upper Bollinger Band indicating a strong move.

  • (2) the volume supported the move up clearly, yes, but this is obvious only in a retrospective view. Look at the volume spikes in mid-August and mid-September. Both events did not trigger any move up.

  • (3) In this example it gets clear that having an isolated view on the volume indicator can be misleading sometimes. To get the power of volume accumulation in trading you need to see is a rise in the OBV indicator along with the stock, ideally topping previous high values.

  • (4) The ADX indicator remained strong in the consolidation phase of November and rose together with the stock. Values above 60 are attributed to unstable trends and just like in this example the stock retraced soon thereafter. Now that the stock breaks out again, we are at a healthy level of 34.30  leaving room to the upside for growth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, volume analysis is a critical tool for understanding market sentiment and identifying potential price trends. The On-Balanced Volume (OBV) indicator offers a unique advantage by combining price movements and volume to provide a clear picture of buying and selling pressure. By tracking the cumulative volume flow, OBV can help traders detect early signs of price trends or reversals, as it reflects whether volume is supporting or contradicting price actions. This makes OBV a valuable tool for confirming trends and enhancing decision-making in trading strategies.

The good thing about volume analysis is it has low correlation to traditional indicators and thus giving you an additional input. Never use volume analysis in an isolated way, always combine it with other indicators to form a solid analysis and to unlock the full power of volume accumulation.
